YESLER BRIDGE OVER 4TH AVENUE HISTORIC MITIGATION
As Seattle prepared to replace the aging but historically significant Yesler Way Bridge over 4th Ave., HRA prepared mitigation documentation for the project, telling the complex history of one of Seattle’s earliest iron and steel bridges. HRA conducted on-site monitoring as the project team dismantled the 1912 bridge and preserved historic-period ornamentation for rehabilitation and reuse on a replacement bridge at the same location. HRA then recorded the bridge’s reconstruction; consulted with other City contractors on the safekeeping, transportation, and rehabilitation of historic-period fabric from the demolished bridge; and prepared a monitoring report on the City’s efforts to reincorporate those rehabilitated historic-period elements into the new bridge design and construction. The project won an Engineering News Record NW Best Project Award.
