HRA provided research, writing, and litigation support to the Michigan Attorney General for United States v. Michigan, which involved Indians’ hunting and fishing rights in a large inland area of Michigan. The case centered on the meaning of language in an 1836 treaty between the United States and various Chippewa and Ottawa bands. HRA collected historical documents, prepared reports, and assisted the state with briefs, interrogatories, and depositions. We also provided research and support for expert witnesses in the fields of history, anthropology, geography, and linguistics. A consent decree settled the case in 2007.
