Archaeologist / Specialist – Portland Office

Steve earned a MA in Anthropology from Portland State University in 1994. He is a trained lithic analyst and has more than 25 years’ experience conducting lithic analysis and directing and implementing all phases of archaeological research for Section 106, Section 110, and NEPA. His experience includes field investigations and lithic research throughout much of the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii for various contracting companies and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. He was also an assistant District Archaeologist for the Forest Service on the Willamette National Forest for five years before joining HRA in 2015.

Steve has analyzed and reported on more than 100 lithic assemblages. His interpretative framework is focused on technological organization, mobility, and settlement patterns, and he utilizes low-powered microwear analysis to facilitate functional interpretations of lithic tools. He has been responsible for implementation and supervision of some 50 or more projects and has authored or co-authored more than 75 technical reports that present results of survey, testing, data recovery, and analysis of both precontact and historic resources. Steve is primarily responsible for lithic analysis and interpretation.
