ARCHAEOLOGIST – PORTLAND OFFICE

Karla Hambelton came to HRA in 2023 with 15 years of professional experience in archaeology. She has extensive experience directing archaeological survey, testing and evaluation, data recovery, and monitoring of precontact and historic-period sites throughout the Pacific Northwest. She has directed numerous large scale archaeological studies throughout Oregon and Washington including pipelines, windfarms, transmission lines, and transportation projects. She has held state and federal archaeological excavation permits in Oregon and Washington. She is the lead author of over 150 cultural resource technical reports, hundreds of archaeological site records, and dozens of monitoring plans, archaeological permit applications, and research designs. She has implemented local, state, and federal cultural resource regulations with extensive experience addressing Section 106 of the NHPA and making NRHP eligibility recommendations. Karla has also served as a laboratory assistant for numerous cultural resource projects and has extensive experience processing artifacts and documents for curation.

Karla received her BA in anthropology from the University of Montana in 2007, and her MA in anthropology from Portland State University in 2012. Her Master’s thesis examined scratched petroglyphs in the Bennett Hills of south-central Idaho.
