BOSQUE REDONDO MEMORIAL AT FORT SUMNER HISTORIC SITE

HRA has completed several projects at Fort Sumner Historic Site / Bosque Redondo Memorial on behalf of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. These were part of a broader reconciliation effort between the State of New Mexico, Navajo Nation, and Mescalero Apache Tribe. The State had been interpreting fort life and the mythology surrounding Billy the Kid at the State-run historic site, rather than the acts of genocide committed by the U.S. Army against the Navajo and Mescalero Apache between 1862 and 1868. HRA worked closely with the three government entities to reinterpret the site as inclusively as possible. In 2017, HRA completed an interpretive plan for the site. Utilizing that document as a foundation, HRA curated a permanent 7,000-square-foot exhibit for the memorial. HRA then oversaw a team to design, develop, fabricate, and install the exhibit, which opened to the public in 2022. HRA worked closely with State staff, as well as representatives from the Navajo Nation Museum and the Mescalero Apache Tribe Tribal Historic Preservation Office.
