Abbie Gardner Sharp Cabin Interpretive Plan

The State of Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) contracted with HRA to prepare an interpretive master plan for the Abbie Gardner Sharp Cabin Historic Site. One of eight historic sites managed by DCA, the Abbie Gardner Sharp Cabin marks the occurrence of a tragic event that took place in March 1857—the so-called Spirit Lake Massacre. As part of the planning process, HRA facilitated a multi-day interpretive workshop among interested parties and subject matter experts, hosted a community open house, and worked closely with Tribal Historic Preservation Officers to develop an interpretive plan that addresses the complexities of this unique historic site and ensures that the stories of the site are presented in an inclusive and accessible manner.
