The National Council on Public History (NCPH) recognized HRA Principal Historian Ian Smith with this year’s “Excellence in Consulting” award for his expert witness work on cases involving the land and water rights of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. Stating that Ian’s testimony and reports reveal “the power of historical research and interpretation in the outcomes of two legal cases involving Indigenous tribes and their struggles to retain land and water rights,” NCPH found that his work “underscores how the application of history can aid marginalized groups.” Please join us in celebrating Ian for this well-deserved recognition!
