The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) proposed improvements to the Burke-Gilman recreational trail through the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. Between 2010 and 2011, HRA completed a cultural resources assessment of alternatives to assist SDOT in meeting compliance requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) regarding cultural resources. HRA project staff reviewed relevant reports, site records, historic property inventory databases, archival literature, and historic maps. Project staff conducted a reconnaissance survey of the trail alignment to identify and record historic buildings and structures greater than 40 years old that had not been previously recorded. The resources were evaluated for the NRHP, Washington Heritage Register, and King County Historic Registry. An archaeological sensitivity map was prepared that identified areas where subsurface investigations were recommended, and a cultural and historic resources report summarized the findings of research and field studies, provided determinations of eligibility for the historic resources, and recommendations for future work and management of resources.
