Daniel has been a professional historian for more than 30 years. Throughout his career, he has provided expert research and historical insight in a wide variety of cases, including water rights, tribal issues, property titles and easements, environmental responsibility, and navigability. His clients include state and federal governmental agencies, tribes, individuals, and private corporations. He is an experienced expert witness, having provided formal expert reports, depositions, and testimony in both state and federal courts across the country.
Daniel’s expertise, natural curiosity, and imagination make him adept at locating relevant original resources efficiently. He has a talent for combining and presenting sources innovatively in both his reports and testimony, so that the judge and jury can see the history unfold. Daniel was born in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He served as a Vista volunteer on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, and then earned his MA in American History from the University of Montana. Prior to joining HRA in 1980, Daniel worked at the Montana Historical Society and the Fort Missoula Historical Museum. He has been a shareholder in HRA for more than twenty years.
Outside the office, Daniel gets the most out of Montana. He enjoys fly-fishing, hunting, cross-country skiing, and mountain and road biking. His most recent adventure included a bike-and-barge trip from Paris to Bruges, only four months after having total knee replacement surgery.
